AR-15 prices falling fast

Posted by Richard on June 22, 2013

Nick Leghorn reports that the law of supply and demand is still operative in the firearms market:

After the gun control scare earlier this year, demand for AR-15 rifles went through the roof. People were maxing out their credit cards on fears that America’s favorite firearm was about to be banned by the powers that be. This cleared the entire available stock of guns, and made manufacturers ramp up to meet demand.

It was good times for manufacturers, but now the AR-15 bubble has burst and things are looking downright depressing for manufacturers.

By now, everyone who “needed” an AR-15 has found one. Even if they emptied their bank accounts to do it, they have their rifle. But with sales slowing down, the price of an AR-15 is cratering. …

The good news is that cheap AR-15s are about to flood the market. If you’ve been waiting for the “right” time to buy a good entry level gun, this is it. …

The bad news is that ammunition is still scarce. It’s on the shelves, but stores haven’t lifted their “one box per person” limit yet. So while you can buy a gun, you still can’t feed it. And God help you if you need some .22lr.

Woohoo! Cheap ARs for everyone! I guess I should go to next weekend’s Tanner gun show. And bring my checkbook. 🙂

Hey Richard welcome back. I hope you get the opportunity at Tanner to pick up an AR at somewhere close to what they’re actually worth. Myself, I think that since the BATF will allow them, they should come with a bumpstock as standard equipment(hey, you don’t have to USE the damn thing you know). I figure as long as I can’t afford it anyway, why not wish for the best. If I hadn’t had the back pay from when I was granted my disability I couldn’t have bought my FN57.
But I figured as long as I had the gelt I might as well get a HUMDINGER of a handgun so I did. The ammo shortage has kinda made it little more expensive than I had counted on but stuff happens. For grins and giggles, I just remembered a chant I used to do while I was hiking with some friends of mine after you moved to Colorado. It was based on the BATF and it went “Bastards And Twits and Fuckheads….Oh my!!”
OK not that funny sober but it had a very high Captain Morgan’s giggle factor. Oddly enough, at present I am not having much trouble buying 5.7mm ammo and the prices have not been all THAT unreasonable. It’s around $27 a box, and
it’s Federal instead of the good Fiocchi stuff, but it was $24 a box before all this nonsense started so it’s not too bad for me. .22lr as you’ve said though, is a whole nother
smoke. It’s hard to find and when you DO, you run into that
“one per customer” BS. It’s bad enough having to pay $7.99
for 50 rounds of cheapass CCI but I should at least be able to buy the amount I want. Especially when half the time all you can get is sub-sonic plinking rounds. This is beginning to get irritating.

Hey, buy one for me too! 🙂

I also noticed that AR parts are starting to be in-stock at various vendors as well. If extra money mysteriously landed in my lap, I could actually finish building #2.

I’ll be at the show Sunday morning at the CSSA table. Last month $600 guns were being asked at $995 so only about 50% over MSRP.

    Last chance for p-mags though.
