Debate drunkblog

Posted by Richard on September 22, 2011

While you and I and most of the American viewing public were watching J.J. Abrams' latest (not bad; not up to the hype, but not bad), the Republican presidential candidates had another "debate." Do I have to remind you that the best way to find out what happened is to read Vodkapundit's drunkblogging of the event?

It looks like Gary Johnson had the best line of the night — maybe the best line of the year:

7:44PM Johnson: My neighbor’s dogs have created more shovel-ready jobs than this administration.

UPDATE: Credit where credit is due: Johnson borrowed that line from Rush Limbaugh.

The President’s Afghanistan speech

Posted by Richard on June 23, 2011

Vodkapundit is drunkblogging it. Much more entertaining than watching it on TV.

UPDATE: 13 minutes. Wow. I've heard Obama take longer to answer a single question.

But he still managed to work in his favorite rhetorical device, the straw-man argument. Vodkapundit's version is more entertaining than Obama's, but essentially the same thing:

Here it comes! “Some would retreat from Nevada… ” Others would nuke the crap out of Holland…” “But I am the sane centrist!”

Well, it was only 13 minutes. But it's 13 minutes I wish I could get back.

SOTU? No, thanks, I’ll pass

Posted by Richard on January 26, 2011

I've heard the Socialist Democrats' favorite euphemism for yet more government spending, "investment," about a bazillion times too many in the past few days. And I have no desire to watch a preening President congratulate himself for his "fiscal responsibility" because he's willing to freeze discretionary spending (sort of) at its current stratospheric level. So I'm going to skip the State of the Union circus and get a little more work done.

I'll check in later on Vodkapundit's drunkblogging of the event. If you're watching the speech, go there now. You'll be glad you did. But I strongly suggest not playing a drinking game where you have to take a swig whenever the Prez says "invest," or "jobs," or "working together," or "Sputnik." Your liver might not survive.

No State of the Union coverage here

Posted by Richard on January 27, 2010

No, I won't be watching, much less posting about, the President's State of the Union speech (or POTUS SOTUS, as we cognoscenti call it). Even if I didn't have work to do, I doubt I could persuade myself to endure the torture. Later, maybe not until tomorrow, I'll read Vodkapundit's drunkblogging of it, which will probably be as informative as and far more entertaining than watching live.

I predict, though, that the William Warren cartoon below will prove prescient (although I'm sure the presentation will be somewhat more cool and subtle than depicted).

Blame Bush cartoon by William Warren

ALG Editor's Note: William Warren's award-winning cartoons published at GetLiberty.org are a
free service of ALG News Bureau. They may be reused and redistributed free of charge.

UPDATE: Yep, the cartoon was prescient. And Vodkapundit did a fine job of drunkblogging as usual. But zombyboy had by far the most informative and amusing coverage — an absolute must-read.

Drunkblogging yet another health care speech

Posted by Richard on September 9, 2009

Vodkapundit is drunkblogging President Obama's 87th (or is it the 112th?) speech promoting government-run health care. I'm not going to watch the speech, but I'll check in on the drunkblogging after a while. I suggest you do the same; it's bound to be much more interesting and informative than the actual speech.

If you want to play the drunkblogging home game, I suggest taking a drink every time you hear "security." I understand that's the new focus-group-tested talking point. The previous one, "choice," didn't sell too well.

Cheers!

UPDATE: Steve's drunkblogging answered almost all my questions about the speech, except how often "security" was mentioned. Judging from his typically amusing and informative outbursts and various other reports and commentary (Instapundit has lots of great quotes, links, and observations), I'm glad I didn't watch. Nothing new to see here, folks, move along.

Of course, there was apparently a passing reference to allowing some "experiments" in a few states with some unspecified form of tort reform, so another big question is this: How many Republicans will seize on this whisper of a hint of a bone that might be tossed to them to roll over, beg, and lick Obama's hand? My guess is that Steve's correct (at 5:53), and it will be more than a few. "Gutless," "unprincipled," and "Republican" are an all-too-common three-part oxymoron.

UPDATE2: Hugh Hewitt:

Talk about underwhelming.

Most telling was the laughter at the phrase "there remain some details to be worked out," which the president wasn't counting on.

"Misinformation," "bogus claims," "scare tactics," "such a charge would be laughable,' "it is a lie plain and simple" –welcome to the bipartisanship of hope and change.

This speech may be rallying the left, but it isn't doing anything to advance "bipartisan" solutions. It appears that the president has settled on a jam down, one built on the same lame arguments that have failed to persuade a majority or even a near majority of Americans.

Indeed™.

UPDATE3: Reason's Peter Suderman (emphasis added):

Philip Klein and my former colleague Greg Conko have a new paper out making the case against the current batch of health-care reform proposals.
The criticisms of liberal reforms are sharp, but what really makes the paper worthwhile are two aspects. The first is that, contrary to the president's accusation that those who oppose reform have no solutions of their own, they actually propose and detail a number of useful, specific reforms, including some that tend to get less attention, like curbing regulations on medical devices and new drugs that artificially increase scarcity (and, as a result, drive up costs).
The second is that they fully recognize that the current health-care system is a disaster, and that the reforms they propose wouldn't necessarily ensure that those with chronic preexisting conditions have access to health insurance. But, they say, the current patchwork of ill-thought-out government regulations of the health care market is so problematic—and, in fact, exacerbates our health care problems so much—that it must be fixed before addressing the few remaining problem cases.

… Conko and Klein have done some solid, capable work. More than that, they've proven, once again, that anyone who buys the president's argument that opponents of liberal reform don't have anything to offer just isn't listening.

Drunkblogging the big speech

Posted by Richard on February 25, 2009

Stephen Green is drunkblogging the President's address to Congress tonight, and he's suggested that we play along at home by taking a drink whenever we hear “hope,” “change,” “invest,” or “stimulus.”

I don't have nearly enough alcohol in the house to play that game. Besides, my poor liver wouldn't survive.

I think I'll watch one of the episodes of Heroes I've got on the DVR. I can read Green's drunkblogging afterward. I'm sure it will be just as informative as watching the speech, and much more enjoyable.

UPDATE: Between the drunkblog and the late news, I know more than I really wanted to know about the speech.

Did the Prez really talk that fast, or was Steve's perception of time distorted by some mind-altering substance?

Did the Prez really say this nation invented the automobile? If W had said that, the derisive laughter would have gone on for days.
