Happy birthday, Carnival of Liberty!

Today isn’t just America’s Independence Day — it’s also the birthday of the Carnival of Liberty. Yes, the little rascal appeared on the scene last Independence Day, born at Brad Warbiany’s The Unrepentant Individual. And, by golly, that’s where the birthday party is. Head on over and see how big the rascal’s gotten!

What a plethora of posts! And unlike yours truly, who was busy thinking about this trip and other matters, many of the LLP members actually had the foresight to anticipate Independence Day and write something appropriate for the occasion. [Sigh. I’m sure I’ll do better next year. It’s so unlike me to be busy and distracted. 😉 ]

Happy Independence Day!

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Those earth-changing words were written and agreed to 230 years ago by these guys — take a moment to thank them for "proclaim[ing] Liberty throughout the land."

Now, get away from that computer and go celebrate in some way. Later today, I’ll be celebrating with my dad — and thanking him for defending Liberty sixty-some years ago. In fact, thanks to all the veterans and servicemen/women out there!

Gun stuff

If you’re interested in guns, shooting, and gun-rights-related matters, there are two carnivals for you to check out this week. First, Mr. Completely is hosting Carnival of Cordite #63. It is, as he acknowledged, a modest-sized carnival, but there are some interesting — and fun — posts, along with a pretty neat church sign. Check it out.

Second, Free Constitution is hosting an Independence Weekend Second Amendment Carnival. The emphasis here is more on legal and political stuff (I didn’t notice any range reports or pictures of weird old Ukrainian military sidearms). If you’re interested in arms and the law, check this one out, too.
