Joy today, sadness tomorrow

Posted by Richard on January 19, 2009

Today, on MLK Day, I'm celebrating the fact that in my lifetime this country has gone from Lester Maddox, ax handle in his hand, blocking the school door to the election of an African-American as President. That, my friends, is a remarkable journey and a tremendous achievement.

Starting tomorrow, I'll be depressed thinking about the misbegotten policies likely to be enacted by this particular African-American. If you're too young to remember the Carter years (most people today are), think double-digit inflation, double-digit unemployment, and economic stagnation. Think "yes we can" replaced by "malaise."

You’re such a damn cynic! Didn’t you know that immediately after BO takes the oath, yeah verily upon his pronunciation of the final syllable, the skies will clear (except for a smattering of joyful cumulus clouds, appearing only in the shapes of your favorite plush toys) and multiple rainbows will appear across the vault of the heavens? And at the ends of each of these rainbows (there will be thousands of them), leprechauns will spring forth from the aether, and they will mount winged unicorns and fly the length and breadth of our nation, casting aside all doubt and gloom using magic government minted manna cookies, which can be redeemed for big screen HDTVs and Chrysler products.

You mean there isn’t malaise today?

Oh, Jed, you are so right! And all we have to do is believe.
