Think warm thoughts

Posted by Richard on February 15, 2014

I lived in Knoxville, TN, from 1961-64 and 1967-82. That was a long time ago, and maybe my memory is failing me, but I don’t recall during all those years ever seeing a 6-inch snowfall. Or hearing of 7 inches in Chattanooga. I’m guessing my friends in East Tennessee — heck, folks throughout the eastern half of the country — are about ready for a good dose of global warming. 🙂

Here’s a little ditty that will help you all get through the next arctic blast:

Hey Richard. Nice tune. I had not heard of Joe Nichols until I listened to the song. I could have
gone all day without hearing the term global warming though…:=). Maybe somebody could shut them up by writing a tune called “barycenter”. It’s not a catchy title and the lyrics would be even worse, but they could use this little discourse for liner notes:
The barycenter is the point between two objects where they balance each other. For example, it is the center of mass where a moon orbits a planet or a planet orbits a star. Both bodies are actually orbiting around a point that lies outside the center of the larger body. The moon doesn’t orbit the exact center of the Earth. It actually orbits a point on a line between the center of the Earth and the Moon that’s about 1,710 km below the surface of the Earth. The solar system of course also has a barycenter—depending on the current locations and masses of all nine planets
(I refuse to insult the memory of Clyde Tombaugh by demoting his discovery to the ridiculous status of “dwarf” planet) the barycenter of the solar system is either below the surface of the sun or more than twice the sun’s diameter outside of the sun’s surface. This results in the sun doing a crazy wobble around it (if you’d to see it go here: http://astro.unl.edu/classaction/animations
    /extrasolarplanets/ca_extrasolarplanets_starwobble.html)
which results in cycles of changing irradiance of all the planets, including our own warming at the present time Earth, which BTW has a 30 year cycle in which the heat hitting the side of it facing the sun is changing by about 3% which doesn’t sound like whole lot until you realize that’s about 40 watts per square meter. That comes out to a total of 1.0305 x 10 to the 10th power MEGAWATTS of heat. And THAT is a shitload and a half of heat! An amount which I utterly refuse to believe could be added to the atmosphere by ANY human activity including what the GAIA worshippers blow out their asses. Have a NYE’S day.

And that, ladies and gents, is your science lesson for today. Thanks, Rick!
