Fox on roof redux

Posted by Richard on April 9, 2010

What is it about Denver-area foxes? One thing's for sure — they're not afraid of heights! Regular readers may recall that last August I posted a picture of a fox on the roof of my house. And commenter Stacy reported a fox on the roof in Northglenn (a Denver suburb) in October.

Well, tonight Denver's ABC affiliate, 7News (KMGH) showed viewer video of a fox on the roof of someone's two-story house. It looked a lot like my fox. But I suppose, to non-foxes, all foxes look pretty much alike.

It's only a few minutes after the story aired, and it doesn't seem to be on their website yet. A search of their site for "fox" turned up some Fox Network/News stories and one about Megan Fox. She's probably not much brighter than the fox on the roof, but way more photogenic.

The fox on roof video may get posted when they get around to updating their site. These legacy media people still see the internet as an afterthought. If I don't forget, I'll check for it in the morning and update with a link if it's available.

Tea Party Express III comes to Colorado

Posted by Richard on March 30, 2010

The Tea Party Express has two stops in Colorado on Wednesday (via email):

GRAND JUNCTION: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31 – 10:00 AM

1301 East Sherwood Drive
Grand Junction, CO

DENVER: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31 – 4:00 PM

West steps of the State Capitol
200 E Colfax Ave
Denver, CO 80203

Tea Party Express III: Just Vote Them Out national tour kicked off this weekend in Searchlight, NV where one of the largest political gatherings in Nevada history took place. The Tea Party Express will hold 44 tea party rallies across the nation, ending in Washington, D.C. for the Tax Day Tea Party on April 15th.

Of course, the Denver turnout won't hold a candle to the Searchlight, Nevada, mega-rally. But I hope the Denver Post at least provides fairer coverage than CNN gave the Searchlight event.

Searchlight's population is about 600, and it's in the middle of the desert 60 miles south of Las Vegas. Crowd estimates for the "retire Harry Reid" rally ranged from 9-11,000 to more than 20,000. Countless others weren't able to get there; even after the rally had ended, traffic headed into Searchlight was still backed up 15 in both directions. So how did CNN's Fredricka Whitfield report the event? According to NewsBusters (emphasis in original):

"Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin there in Searchlight, Nev., was the backyard of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but today it's the backdrop of this Tea Party Express – making a stop here," Whitfield said. "Hundreds of people, at least dozens of people – we haven't gotten a count of how many people turned out there. We heard Sarah Palin talk about everything about the campaign, to unseat Sen. Reid to what she calls ObamaCare, on the heels of that health care vote and even talking about her definition of her love of America."

Pictures and links at Gateway Pundit. Yep, that's at least dozens.

Anyone can be an expert on a TV newscast

Posted by Richard on March 25, 2010

We had about 10" of wet, heavy snow yesterday and overnight — typical March storm — and all over Denver there were fallen branches and downed trees and power lines. On one of the local newscasts tonight, they talked with a "tree expert" (I think he was from the Denver Forestry Dept.) about what people should do to save their trees. He advised people to try to knock the snow off because "if it freezes overnight, it'll become twice as heavy."

Who knew that H2O was capable of such an amazing transformation? Is that what they mean by "heavy water"?

Tawfik Hamid appearing in Denver

Posted by Richard on March 2, 2010

The Act! for America 5280 Coalition is sponsoring multiple appearances in the Denver area this week by Dr. Tawfik Hamid, a physician, former terrorist, and author of The Roots of Jihad and Inside Jihad: Understanding and Confronting Radical Islam. Public appearances include lectures Tuesday evening at Regis University, Thursday evening at the University of Colorado, and Friday evening at University Park United Methodist Church. On Tuesday, Dr. Hamid will be a guest on KHOW radio's Peter Boyles show from 7-8 AM and the Caplis/Silverman show from 4-4:30 PM.

Check the 5280 Coalition's calendar for the complete schedule and more about the events, including maps to the locations.

More about Dr. Hamid:

Born in Egypt to a secular Muslim family, Tawfik Hamid joined the extremist Islamic group Jamma’a Islameia in Cairo when he was a student in medical school. In his studies he was learning to heal, but in his thoughts, as he says, “I dreamed to die for Allah and to share in terrorist acts.”   One of Dr. Hamid's colleague in these formative days of the terror movement was Dr. Al Zawaherri, then an acquaintance with whom Tawfik used to pray, and now the number two person of Al Qaeda.

Just before heading for further training in Afghanistan, Dr. Hamid began to question the hatred and impulses to violence that participation in extremist Islam was fomenting within him.  He decided to leave the terror movement, became a physician, and also became a scholar of Islamic texts.  As he began to preach in Mosques to promote a message of peace instead of violence and hatred however, he himself became a target of the Islamic extremists who had been his friends. They threatened his life, forcing him and his family to flee Egypt, and then Saudi Arabia.  As Dr. Hamid says "The powers of darkness were overwhelming and I was forced to emigrate with my family to the West seeking freedom."

Because of his insider understanding of terrorist mentality, Dr. Hamid predicted the Twin Towers (9-11) attacks several years before they occurred. Now his mission has become to educate the West against Islamic Fundamentalism, which he regards as a cancer that is spreading with frightening rapidity across the globe today.

Dr. Hamid also seeks within Islam to build new thinking to overcome the hatred and violent extremism that have metastasized within his religious tradition.

UPDATE: Fox 31 KDVR aired a short interview with Dr. Hamid tonight. Reporter Leland Vitter was quite impressed, telling the anchors he spoke with Dr. Hamid for 15 minutes and wished it could have been an hour. No video on the website yet, but there's a brief story

I survived Blogger Fest 2010-02-06

Posted by Richard on February 7, 2010

Or was it Blogger Fest 0x0000000000000001? I'm not clear about the numbering. Honestly, right now I'm not clear about anything. Except that I left before midnight (and wasn't the last to leave this time) and arrived home safely about half past.

Billll did a good job of choosing a location. The Old Mill Brewery has excellent food and decent house-brewed beer, and we ended up having a back room to ourselves (about 20 of us). It was a fine evening. If you ever go there, I heartily recommend the Penne Gorgonzola, Off Colfax thought the prime rib was excellent, and the burgers got thumbs up from everyone who tried them.

Thanks to the staff at the Old Mill Brewery for showing us a great time!

Now I hear a pillow calling my name…

Blogger fest reminder

Posted by Richard on February 5, 2010

Rocky Mtn. Blogger Fest Feb. 6If you're in the Denver area, don't forget that the Rocky Mountain Blogger Fest is taking place Saturday evening (more info here). So you might want to give your liver a rest tonight to get it in shape.

OTOH, some people would argue that the best way to get your liver in shape for the event is by giving it a good workout. Pump it up! πŸ™‚

Whichever strategy you follow, I hope to see you there tomorrow night!

Blogger fest

Posted by Richard on February 1, 2010

Rocky Mtn. Blogger Fest Feb. 6It's not a Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash (RMBB), it's a Rocky Mountain Blogger Fest (RMBF). I have no clue what the difference is. Ask Billll, it's his idea. Apparently, he's been checking out bars and pubs all over the metro area for a new location for our irregular drinkfests (the sacrifices some people are willing to make!), and he came across what he promises is a fine spot — the Old Mill Brewery (click for map) in downtown Littleton:

If you include Steve Green in the numbers, it's centrally located, and isn't that hard to get to in any case. It's 2 blocks off Sante Fe if you're driving, and 3 blocks from the Littleton light rail station if you're a public transit fan. They also have lots of free parking.

I've been there. The food is good, the beer is good, and they have an area toward the back where birthday parties, Blogger Fests and the like are held. They have areas scattered about that can accommodate groups from 12 to 30, and if we get the back area, they'll even turn the TV off. Or on if there's something momentous going on.

Sounds great. I can stumble 3 blocks back to the train station and then (assuming I remember to get off at Broadway) stagger less than half a mile home. It's not that I'm a huge public transit fan — I'm a fan of avoiding DUI arrest. And I'm not known for exercising self-discipline and restraint at these events.

All the details are in the graphic on the right (courtesy of Jed), but here they are again: Old Mill Brewery, 5798 S. Rapp St., Littleton, CO, on Saturday, February 6, at 7 PM. I'll be there. Billll and Jed will be there. Mr. Lady will be there (and she promised to wear a short skirt). I'm betting that Darren, Off Colfax, and David will make their way there, and Vodkapundit will show up just to add some class to the event. Who knows who else.

If you're a blogger, former blogger, wannabe blogger, blogger groupie, or just a fan of intelligent conversation combined with prodigious quantities of adult beverages (thus making it less intelligent as the night progresses), join us!

Hey, since it's a Fest, not a Bash, does that mean we start a new numbering scheme? Can we come up with one that's remotely sane this time?

The agony of defeat

Posted by Richard on December 27, 2009

Well, Santa didn't give me the Christmas present I wanted — although it was close. With the help of some questionable calls by the refs and a critical 27-yard scramble on third down by McNabb (Limbaugh is right, he's a much-improved QB), the Eagles beat the Broncos by a field goal. Considering that they were two-touchdown favorites, I suppose it was a moral victory (and some bettors were happy).

But the loss means Denver is unlikely to make the playoffs. And has now faded in December for the fourth straight year. That sucks.

On the positive side, I was glad to see that Brian Dawkins got the welcome home he deserved — a standing ovation from the Philly fans, who are infamous for booing everyone, including Santa Claus.

Elsewhere in the NFL, the Colts lost for the first time. Because, with a five-point lead, Caldwell benched Peyton Manning early in the second half (and it was clear Manning didn't like it). That has to be the most chicken-sh*t move by a head coach in many a year. Hell, if you think the game doesn't matter, you don't care about winning, and you're so worried about an injury to your QB — why not just forfeit the damn game? That way you don't risk anybody getting injured!

You don't do that because you're being paid to coach, the players are being paid to play, and the fans are there to see you all give it your best. They didn't today.

Pull Manning in the 4th or if the outcome is no longer in doubt — sure. But in the 3rd with a five-point lead?

Really chicken-sh*t.

Shocker! Mainstream news outlet uses phrase “global cooling”

Posted by Richard on October 27, 2009

It's definitely a "man bites dog" event when a CBS-affiliated local TV news department headlines a story "Global Cooling Causes Fish Kill In Cherry Creek":

DENVER (CBS4) – A major fish kill was reported Tuesday afternoon in Cherry Creek in downtown Denver.

Dead fish were spotted from Confluence Park upstream to Speer Boulevard.
The fish were small, between two to four inches long. They were floating in the swift current and sloughing off on the banks of the creek.

The Division Of Wildlife said the kill came as a result of global cooling.

I'm sure the DOW really said something about "recent cooling" or the like, referring to the weather, not climate. And I'm certain that legions of climate change watchdogs are contacting CBS4Denver at this moment, and the offending phrase will soon be scrubbed from the story. But it gave me a laugh. Here's the original preserved for posterity:

Too cold for baseball

Posted by Richard on October 10, 2009

Tonight's Rockies-Phillies playoff game has been postponed because of weather:

Game Three of the 2009 National League Division Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Colorado has been postponed due to inclement weather, and has been rescheduled for Sunday at 8:07 p.m. mountain time.

Game Four has been moved to Monday. Those fans with tickets for Game Three will now be able to use them only for Sunday's game at 8:07 p.m. mountain time.

Those fans with tickets for Game Four will be able to use them for Monday's game.

The problem isn't precip — we have light snow falling right now, but it should end by early afternoon. The problem is the cold. The low this morning was 17° F., shattering the old record low of 25° set in 1905. At 10 AM, it's all the way up to 19°, and windy enough to make it feel considerably colder.

I doubt we'll even come close to the record low high for the date of 34°, and we'll have record cold again tonight. When the gloves feel like cinder blocks, it's not exactly baseball weather.

Global warming is like the police — it's never around when you really need it.

Another DeGette health care meeting

Posted by Richard on September 11, 2009

Rep. Dianne DeGette (D-CO1) initially declined to meet with the peasants in person, opting to hold only a "phone forum" on health care during the recess. But apparently, she's seen the light — or felt the heat. Or maybe she now sees such meetings as an opportunity to rally her mostly leftist constituents into action in support of government-controlled health care.

DeGette hosted a health care meeting last Thursday morning (convenient for government workers and the unemployed), and now she's scheduled another for this coming Saturday (via email):

When: Saturday, September 12 at 10:00 AM

Where: South High School's Auditorium (1700 E Louisiana Ave Denver)

What: Discussion with constituents of the First Congressional District about health insurance reform

There is no RSVP process. Entrance will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 9:15 AM.

As you know, Congress is currently debating legislation that aims to provide health care coverage for all Americans and reduce costs. I appreciate your communication on this issue and hope that you will continue to share your thoughts with me.

Please check my Web site (http://degette.house.gov) for other upcoming events.

If you're in the Denver area and free, I suspect attending the ACT! for America "Citizens in Action" Conference with Brigitte Gabriel would be a better use of your time. But if you're inclined to express yourself on health care, by all means go for it. But be prepared with a knowledgeable comment or a tough question or two. You might want to take a look at key parts of H.R. 3200 (PDF, 1018 pages), or at least take a look at John David Lewis's excerpts and analyses regarding nine important questions, including the issue of health care rationing.

Brigitte Gabriel in Colorado

Posted by Richard on September 9, 2009

Brigitte Gabriel, the founder of American Congress for Truth and its activist offshoot, ACT! for America, is going to be in the Denver area later this week for two events. I've written about Gabriel before (here, here, and here). As a Lebanese Christian, she spent seven years of her childhood living in a bomb shelter during Lebanon's civil war, and saw most of her friends killed by the Islamofascists. She's an articulate and passionate spokesperson for the war against Islamofascism and the author of Because They Hate: A Survivor of Islamic Terror Warns America and They Must Be Stopped

Here are the details of her two appearances (via email):

On September 11th, Brigitte will deliver a keynote address on the campus of Colorado Christian University.

This event is free and open to the public. After the event Brigitte will autograph copies of her New York Times bestselling book They Must Be Stopped. Books will be available for purchase.

When: Friday, September 11th, 7:30 P.M.

Where: The "Events Center" at Colorado Christian University

8787 W. Alameda Ave.

Lakewood, Colorado

On September 12th, Brigitte will be joined by ACT! for America Executive Director Guy Rodgers, National Field Director Kelly Cook, and Director of Government Relations Lisa Piraneo at the ACT! for America "Citizens in Action" Conference.

The conference will be held at the Denver Marriott South Hotel in Littleton.

Topics covered include:

A basic understanding of radical Islam

Why the typical Western approach in dealing with radical Islam does not work – and what does

How to inform and persuade elected officials

How to communicate the truth about radical Islam more effectively

How to recognize and combat political correctness

How to detect tell-tale signs of suspicious activity

And much more!

For more information, or to register, click here.

The Sept. 12 conference is from 8 AM to 5 PM and costs $45 per person or $70 per couple, which includes a notebook, educational DVD, and ACT! for America lapel pin. Due to a prior commitment, I won't be able to attend, but if you're in the Denver area, I encourage you to do so. And maybe you could share some of what you learn with me. πŸ™‚

DeGette holding health care meeting

Posted by Richard on September 2, 2009

Congresswoman Dianne DeGette is meeting with constituents this Thursday about health care. In person this time, unlike her earlier "phone forum." Of course, it's mid-morning on a weekday, so those of us who are gainfully employed are pretty much shut out unless we want to take time off from work. I'm going to pass, but if you're free (and one of her constituents — they'll probably check IDs), by all means attend. Here are the details:

When: Thursday, September 3 at 10:00 AM

Where: The Molly Blank Conference Center, National Jewish Health (1400 Jackson Street, Denver)

What: Discussion with constituents of the First Congressional District about health insurance reform

As you know, Congress is currently debating legislation that aims to provide health care coverage for all Americans and reduce costs.  I appreciate your communication on this issue and hope that you will continue to share your thoughts with me.

Please check my Web site (http://degette.house.gov) for other upcoming events.

If you go, maybe you could ask her why H.R. 3200 mandates fewer choices instead of more (only four "qualified" plans are allowed, and their coverage, deductibles, co-pays, etc., are strictly defined) and why Health Savings Account plans are not allowed. And please report back in the comments.

Manufacturing consent in Denver

Posted by Richard on August 30, 2009

Since I still haven't posted a report on Friday's rally in support of government-controlled health care and I'm feeling lazy today, I'll refer you to El Marco's excellent report and photo essay.

Especially noteworthy: The line to enter the rally site moved slowly, as staff members with clipboards required attendees to put down their name and address to be allowed in. Those who asked were told it was a security thing. Later, Rep. Ed Perlmutter thanked everyone for signing and said the names would be sent to Washington to show support for Obamacare.

The Saturday Denver Post story lived down to their usual standard (I really miss the Rocky; their reporting certainly wasn't without its problems, but at least they didn't always err on the same side). For instance, reporter Mike McPhee said this:

About 50 to 60 protesters stood off the school grounds, across West 32nd Avenue, waving banners. Their chants were drowned out by the much larger, noisier crowd.

Fail. We weren't across West 32nd. We were on the same side of the street as the high school (the rally location). Our chants weren't drowned out because we weren't chanting.

Oh, people would shout things from time to time (usually in response to something shouted our way by the l'Obamatized attendees passing by us). And then there was the Paulian woman who kept shouting "arrest the banksters!" when she wasn't trying to tell people the "troof" about 9/11. (It disturbs me that for over a decade, I lent financial support to Ron Paul and thus helped in some way to make this insane movement possible.)

McPhee's story did provide a quote from Rep. Perlmutter that, if accurate, is quite revealing regarding his understanding of the Constitution and the difference between government and private businesses:

"My daughter has epilepsy, and she's being discriminated against because of her prior condition," he told the cheering crowd. "We're not going to let her get pushed aside.

"Under the 14th Amendment, we are guaranteed equal protection. People with prior conditions are not being protected."

I shake my head in sadness and disbelief.
