The Obama campaign began notifying people this afternoon that they've been granted tickets to the August 28th Invesco Field coronation. But the lucky recipients still have to appear in person and prove their identity (emphasis added):
The first Coloradans to be notified were contacted Thursday afternoon. Everyone getting a ticket will be notified by Friday night, the Obama campaign said.

Tickets must be picked up in person on Saturday or Sunday at one of 13 Obama campaign offices across the state. Those picking up a ticket must show a photo ID then activate their ticket online, by phone or in person by Aug. 19.
That strikes me as pretty funny. These are the same liberal progressive community-organizer types who've fought tooth and nail for years against requiring voters to present IDs. They're the same people who denounce every attempt to fight vote fraud — the kind facilitated by all the fake registered voters created by ACORN, the far-left activist group for which Obama worked — as voter intimidation, discrimination, and the chilling of political expression.
More audacity of arrogance. More leftist self-righteousness. The standards that they want to apply to everyone else don't apply to them. Because, after all, they're noble and good and have only the best of intentions. They can do whatever they want because they're doing it to make this a better world!
BTW, the campaign still insists that there was no extortion or pressure to volunteer, and that tickets were awarded in a completely fair manner:
The campaign is standing by its original statement. It said all requests for credentials are being honored in the order they were received.
A number of commenters here tell a different story. The people who signed up within minutes of the announcement and were wait-listed have a reasonable suspicion that they got screwed. But the poor saps who actually completed their volunteer work and still got wait-listed — well, they've really been played for fools.

Let's see — the last Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash was number 7.5. So that makes the next one … 5000? WTF?? Well, at least Zombyboy has admitted what we've all known for a while: "Our Numbering Scheme is Inexplicable. Sorry About That."
VodkaPundit thinks 5000 is the number of shots Zombyboy will have to buy us. I think that's way overoptimistic; I doubt he'll spring for more than a couple of hundred.
In any case, don't let crazy numbering stop you from attending RMBB 5000: The Donkeys Over Denver Edition. Don't let all the fuss over at Invesco Field that night stop you, either. This will be much more intellectually stimulating, better company, and more fun (easier to get in, too):

If you could generate electricity from political correctness and self-righteousness, the Democratic National Convention would be powering a small city even before it starts. For months now, we've heard stories about how green this convention will be. Everything's going to be recycled. No fried foods are allowed (isn't that discriminating against certain ethnic cultures?). Caterers have to use mostly organic and locally-grown food.
The DNC has contracted with a company to provide "carbon offsets" for the unavoidable fossil fuel consumption associated with the convention. Delegates are being urged (cajoled? nagged?) to buy these carbon credits to offset the environmental sin of their travel. But Face The State has discovered that one of the carbon credit recipients isn't doing much carbon offsetting:
WRAY – The eastern Colorado wind turbine tapped for the Democratic National Convention's carbon-offset program has one problem: It doesn't generate any electricity. Convention organizers are now being questioned for their eagerness to market those credits to delegates.
The DNC has contracted with Vermont-based NativeEnergy to offer delegates "Green challenge" carbon offsets to soften the environmental impact of convention travel. That money is then invested in carbon-free "green" energy sources around the country, including a wind turbine installed this year by the Wray School District RD-2. But a Face The State investigation reveals the district's turbine has never produced marketable energy due to massive equipment malfunctions.
It took a blog to expose this boondoggle. Newspaper reporters these days seem to think their job is to recycle press releases and take what politicians and bureaucrats tell them at face value:
In a feature story in Saturday's Rocky Mountain News, reporter Jerd Smith claimed that 20 percent of Wray's power is generated by what it calls "a windmill that toils day and night producing clean electricity." Smith's report professed that the Wray project is "at the heart" of the DNC's carbon-credit program.
The Rocky report also described the school wind turbine as "a project that generates thousands of dollars for the region's cash-strapped schools," but provided no financial data regarding any energy sales to date.
The Rocky story may be right about the windmill generating cash, but it's not from generating energy. It's from hawking worthless "carbon offsets" to the gullible Gaia-worshipping Democratic delegates, who will tell themselves how caring and conscientious they are as they jet across the country to Denver for what amounts to an extended infomercial.

In the past six months or so, there have been several shootings and a stabbing in Denver's LoDo (Lower Downtown) neighborhood. Most, if not all, occurred around 2 AM when the trendy bars in the area disgorge their inebriated patrons onto the streets. Most, if not all, involved young thugs, festooned with bling and 'tude.
There was another such incident this past weekend, involving thugs wielding a sawed-off shotgun and shooting at someone who dissed them, or looked wrong, or something. Police intervened, killing one and injuring another. There was also an unrelated incident in Curtis Park (gang hotbed) where an 8-year-old was caught in the crossfire from a drive-by.
Mayor John Hickenlooper doesn't like seeing this kind of violence — especially with the DNC coming to town soon and hitting those trendy bars — and wants to do something about.
Does it surprise you to learn that it involves gun laws? It shouldn't — he's apparently a buddy of NYC's Mike Bloomberg and one of the "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" (which is really against all guns).
I've got a couple of questions for Mayor Hick: First, do you really think the low-life scum who do this stuff give a rat's ass whether you enact tougher gun laws?
Second, can you identify even one of the perpetrators of these violent acts who was lawfully carrying a legally obtained weapon?
Maybe the knife was legal. But I doubt it.
As of tonight, the Rocky Mountain News has an online poll in the sidebar to this story asking if you'd support stricter gun laws. Go and voice your opinion. Right now, it's 75% against, but only a few people have voted.

It's been over two months since the last blogger bash. That's a good enough reason for another one, isn't it? Of course it is.
Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash 7.5 will convene at 6:30 PM, Saturday, June 7th, at The Corner Office. That's inside the Curtis Hotel at 14th and Curtis, and judging from the website, it's a bit trendy and Flash-y (pun intended) for an old curmudgeon like me. But the menu looks OK and they've got Guinness on tap, so I'll be there. How about you?

It's been about five months since Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash 7.2, so according to the experts (that is, zombyboy and whatever cabal he conspires with), it's time for RMBB 7.3. More precisely, 7.3 of 9 or More. That's a Star Trek: Voyager reference. Note the Borg cube in the graphic Jed created.
(Yes, there's some disagreement about the number and its punctuation. No, I don't understand the RMBB numbering scheme, which has gone from 5.5 to 6 to 6.5-something to 7.2 to 7.3. But I digress.)
RMBB 7.3 (of 9) will commence at 7 PM on Saturday, March 22, at the Falling Rock Tap House in LoDo (lower downtown Denver). Their website has a map. Drop by ResurrectionSong to see who's attending, submit your RSVP, and peruse the comments, where you'll learn that March 22 is William Shatner's birthday. And get a good sense of just how weird and entertaining the attendees are likely to be.
I want to thank David for picking a location just a few blocks from light rail, and all you taxpayers for funding this heavily-subsidized mode of transportation. You've made it possible for me to attend without spending more on cab fare than beer and with no risk (well, minimal risk…) of spending the night in jail.

Why, yes, we did have a White Christmas in Denver. Not only did it snow Christmas Day (which only happens about once every nine years), it was the biggest Christmas Day snow in over a century — about 8". But Old Man Winter was just warming up (a figure of speech bearing no relationship to literal truth). We're getting another 8" or so today. I'm glad I don't have to go to work this week. I'm just going to hole up and work my way through a bunch of the Christmas goodies I got.
BTW, remember the stories a couple of months ago about how global warming was destroying Colorado's ski industry? If you're a skier or boarder from the Midwest, South, or East, I hope that nonsense didn't discourage you from planning a Colorado ski vacation this winter — you're missing some phenomenal snow. So far in December, most of the resorts have gotten 7 or 8 feet of snowfall, and the perennial big-snow mountains, Monarch and Wolf Creek, have topped 10 feet.
UPDATE: I only got another 4-5", so there's about a foot out there. At 11 pm, the sky's starting to clear, so soon you'll be able to count the number of degrees on one hand.

After about a six-month hiatus, Walter in Denver is posting regularly again. In yesterday's post, he pointed to a story about how Mexican-Americans (and fans of Mexican food) are suffering thanks to people like Al Gore, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi. He also corrected a language error many of us are guilty of. Check it out.
With Walter in Denver back in operation, can Wienerville be far behind? (How are you doing, Bert?)
And Life's Better Ideas? (David awakened briefly at the beginning of the month, so he could get going again any day now.)

I suspect there'll be a lot of special teams work this week at Dove Valley (the Broncos' practice facility). To go along with more work on defense.
Hey, Todd "we're not going to kick it away from him" Sauerbrun: didn't Devin Hester's punt return for a touchdown make you wonder about the wisdom of those words? I guess not, because you guys let him do it again on a kickoff. So Denver outscored the rest of the Bears 34-23, but Hester gave them another 14. Because you thought it would be "chicken-shit" to try to keep the ball out of his hands.
I'll tell you what, the next time you're facing an awesome, record-setting kick returner, I'll chip in a few bucks to help buy you a clue.

The Denver Broncos headed into Detroit having lost 4 of the last 5, with a 3-4 record. They have the worst rush defense in the NFL, and their offense moves the ball, but can't seem to score. They've suffered a spate of season-ending injuries, and hotshot running back Travis Henry is facing suspension for a drug offense. How much worse could the news get?
Significantly worse, it seems. With John Lynch injured, the already weak defense is positively terrible. The offense was already shaky, and now Cutler is out with a leg contusion. Midway through the third, they're trailing 23-0. The Lions just held them on 4th and goal at the 4. While I was typing the preceding, the Lions scored again, covering 90+ yards in two plays. 30-0.
I'm going for a walk.
UPDATE: Final: 44-7. But it's a warm, sunny day, the park was beautiful, and I had a nice long walk.

The Broncos failed to turn the corner tonight. That's a pun, sort of. I remember when the Broncos signed Dré Bly, people were talking about how awesome the Broncos' pass defense would be. Bly and Champ Bailey are widely acknowledged to be the two best cornerbacks in the NFL, and among the best corners ever to play the game. Some fans salivated over how many INTs the two of them would collect, while others speculated that opponents wouldn't even try to throw deep against them.
Bret Favre burned each of the super corners for a long TD. The second, against Bly, went for 82 yards and ended the shortest overtime in NFL history — one play, 15 seconds, Packers win.
But really, the Broncos blew this game in regulation. As time was winding down, they failed to punch it into the end zone for the umpteenth time this season. Trailing by 3 with the ball on the five, 3rd and 2 with 20-some seconds to play and no time outs, Cutler ran for the first down — one of the stupidest plays ever.
Fortunately, the kicking team was able to pull off another miracle and line up in record time, and Elam tied the game with no time on the clock. But why, oh why, not try another pass into the end zone? The one on 2nd down to Marshall just barely failed. Assuming you don't screw up and throw an interception, at worst an incomplete pass stops the clock and makes the field goal a little less iffy. At best, you win the game.
And if they'd won in regulation and avoided the overtime, they'd have avoided the embarrassment of having the whole Broncos organization convinced that Green Bay would run on first down when Mike McCarthy and Bret Favre had other plans.

First, the good news: Football fans attending the Broncos-Packers game Monday night at Mile High won't face the traffic nightmare that had been predicted for downtown Denver.
Now, the bad news: The hoped-for traffic nightmare isn't going to materialize because 50,000 fewer people will be heading for downtown Monday evening. There won't be a Game 5 of the World Series. The Red Sox swept the Rockies.
Bummer. But a great year for the Rockies nonetheless. They won the pennant in near-miraculous fashion, at one point just one strike from elimination. They can be proud of how far they came this year, and they're a young team.
The storybook ending will just have to wait.

I admit it — I gave up on the Rockies trailing 6-0 and switched to the Tennessee – South Carolina game. I'm glad I did. The Vols led 21-0 at halftime, but completely collapsed in the second half, giving up 24 unanswered points. Trailing by 3 with a minute and change to play, they sucked it up, got within field goal range (barely), and freshman kicker Dan Lincoln tied the game from 48 yards out. In overtime, they scored another field goal from 27, and then held the Gamecocks. The 40-yard field goal to tie was wide, and the Vols had a critical win to keep their conference hopes alive.
Back to the Rockies. It looked hopeful when they made it 6-5, but once again the pitching just wasn't up to the job. Seeing the hand writing on the wall, I started drinking heavily in the 8th. Rum and Fresca, my low-cal fave.
Sox win 10-5, take 3-0 lead. Details are in your morning paper. Bummer. Time for a nightcap. Or two. Buffalo Trace, a damn fine bourbon:

UPDATE: Line of the night, from a hometown fan at a local watering hole: "Even if they [Rockies] lose, we still get to live here, and they have to live in Boston." I'll drink to that.
