The weather is never boring in Colorado

Posted by Richard on April 2, 2012

If you like variety, you’ve gotta love Colorado weather. After the wettest and second-snowiest February on record, March was the driest and second-warmest on record. This past weekend, Denver had clear blue skies and temps in the mid to upper 80s.

Thirty-odd hours later, it’s cold and windy β€” and starting to snow. 7News is forecasting that Denver will get 4″ tonight and tomorrow, while areas south and west of town will get 9-12″ or more. Seventeen Colorado counties are under winter weather advisories, watches, or warnings.

I guess I got my shorts and Hawaiian shirts out too soon.

Snow-free at last

Posted by Richard on March 15, 2012

After several days of spring-like weather, the south side of my back yard (shaded all winter by my neighbor’s fence) is finally free of snow cover for the first time since before Thanksgiving.

I blame global warming.

I survived another blogger bash

Posted by Richard on January 28, 2012

Home before midnight, safe and sound. And surprisingly sober. But it was fun, except for one thing. If you live in the Denver metro area, I have some advice for you: don’t go to Merle’s on a Saturday night around 6:30 or 7. Unless you enjoy standing around for an hour waiting for your table.

Short notice: Blogger Bash next Saturday

Posted by Richard on January 24, 2012

Billll is feeling the need for another Blogger Bash. He’s quit bothering with the increasingly arcane numbering, so I’m christening it Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash 2012.1. It will commence about 6:30 (at least, that’s when Billll promises to arrive) at Merle’s (unless he changes his mind again) in downtown Littleton. It’s only a few blocks from the Littleton/Downtown light rail station, for those of you (like me) looking for a risk-free (you know what I mean) transportation alternative.

Bloggers, friends or fans of bloggers, blogger wannabes, and blogger groupies are all invited. Clever conversations, witty repartee, unbridled silliness, and a good time are virtually guaranteed. Especially if Stephen Green shows up and buys shots. πŸ™‚

Check the comments at Billll’s post for any late updates and add your own RSVP if you’re coming.

It must be midnight in Foxboro because the Denver chariot has turned back into a pumpkin.

I survived Blogger Bash 4.30.11 …

Posted by Richard on May 1, 2011

… and it was way too easy. Home well before midnight, which is atypical for blogger bashes.

I blame zombyboy for not being there to buy shots (or encourage others to buy shots). And Vodkapundit for not lending his considerable prestige (and ability to attract the ladies).

Nonetheless, we had a good time and lots of good conversation. Even though a bit too much of it revolved around Billll's nefarious deeds involving home-made weapons and squirrels. Like the last time, the food and beer at the Old Mill Brewery and Grill were excellent.

Despite an iffy weather forecast, I took light rail to and from the event (Old Mill is 3 blocks from the Littleton light rail station, and the Broadway station is 1/2 mile from my house).

It's getting cold in Denver tonight — in the 30s as I came home, with a forecast low of 24° F. (just shy of the record). So the walk was bracing. By the time I arrived back home, I was so damn sober I immediately opened a beer. Prost! And happy weekend, all!

Time for another Blogger Bash

Posted by Richard on April 25, 2011

It's been a while, so Billll has scheduled a Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash for next Saturday, April 30, at the Old Mill Brewery & Grill in Littleton, CO. It's a great venue, with quite good beers and excellent food. We'll have the "birthday room," a private area at the back, to ourselves. Festivities commence about 7 PM.

If you're a blogger, a friend or fan of a blogger, a blogger wannabe, or a blogger groupie, you're invited. Clever conversations, witty repartee, unbridled silliness, and a good time are guaranteed.

Send a message: Spend Less Now

Posted by Richard on March 8, 2011

AFP-Colorado is holding a rally at the State Capitol Wednesday to send a simple message to the Governor and Legislature:

Are you tired of watching those who rally the government for more and more on the evening news every night while you are at the kitchen table figuring out how your family is making ends meet?
It’s time that you stand up and let your voice be heard!
Some legislators in the Colorado Senate just proposed a $1.6 billion tax increase without offering any ideas to reduce government spending.
Colorado faces a budget shortfall of more than $1 billion. It is time we tell our Colorado leaders to Spend Less Now!!
Join us as we make our voices heard at the State Capitol.

Wednesday, March 9th
Colorado State Capitol – West Steps
Noon

If you're in the Denver area and can swing by there on your lunch hour, please add your voice. If, like me, you can't make it to the rally, go to www.spendlessnow.org to sign the Spend Less Now petition.

Stand up against union thuggery in Denver on Tuesday

Posted by Richard on February 21, 2011

From Jeff Crank, Director of AFP-Colorado (via email):

We’ve all seen the outrageous attempts to intimidate Governor Scott Walker and members of the Wisconsin legislature by the SEIU, Organizing for America and other left-wing groups which are trying to disrupt the government of Wisconsin from doing its business.

Now the union bosses have decided to export their unrest to other states – including right here in Colorado.  As the SEIU is standing firm with the turmoil taking place in Wisconsin, they have planned nationwide "Union Solidarity Action Rallies" – including one in Denver tomorrow, Tuesday, February 22, 2011.

Freedom groups from all over Colorado are going to stand firm with Governor Scott Walker, free enterprise and balancing our budget for the sake of our children and grandchildren.  I hope you will join me and other freedom fighters on the west sidewalk surrounding the Colorado State Capitol tomorrow at noon to show our support for fiscal sanity.

Please be aware, the SEIU will have a permit for the actual grounds and we will be respectful of this. If you are on the grounds, do not be disruptive or they can have you removed. We will be meeting on the sidewalk on the west side of the Capitol – where we will express our First Amendment rights and cannot be asked to leave.

Bring your signs, your flags, your friends, and your right to free expression.  Let’s show Colorado that we won’t stand for a future burdened by debt and out-of-control spending.

I'm taking the day off on Tuesday, and I'll be there. If you're in the neighborhood and able to do so (maybe just a long lunch?), please join me.

It’s about time

Posted by Richard on February 5, 2011

Shannon Sharpe is one of the greatest characters in the world of professional football — articulate, funny, outrageous, charismatic, and genuine. He was also the best tight end ever to play the game. So said John Elway, and the record book backs him up.

Sharpe owns all the tight end records. He redefined the role. And he should have been a slam dunk (to mix sports metaphors) to go into the Hall of Fame two years ago when first eligible. This year, he's finally been inducted.

And just in time. His grandmother, who's in a nursing home, soon turns 89. Sharpe said his goal all his life has been to make his grandmother proud, because she's the one who made him the man he is. I'm sure she's been proud of him for many years, but this is the icing on the cake.

Tonight's 10PM local news showed video of him addressing the press, and I wish I could find that video. It was quite moving. There's a short one-on-one interview from ESPN on YouTube.

Congratulations, Shannon, and thanks for so many wonderful memories.

Son of Hamas coming to Colorado

Posted by Richard on January 21, 2011

I mentioned Mosab Hassan Yousef in a post last March about Ayaan Hirsi Ali and the delusional thinking of Tavis Smiley and members of the Obama administration regarding Islamists. Yousef is the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, one of the founders of the terrorist organization Hamas. He didn't follow in his father's footsteps.

For ten years, Yousef worked as an undercover agent for Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency, providing vital information about Hamas operations that saved countless lives. He's a convert to Christianity and the author of Son of Hamas, which has received astonishingly good reviews on Amazon. From Colorado Jewish GOP:

Yousef claims that his doubts about Islam and Hamas began forming when he realized Hamas’ brutality, and that he hated how Hamas used the lives of suffering civilians and children to achieve their goals.

Yousef was held by Shin Bet agents in 1996. He claims that while in prison, he became appalled as he compared the Shin Bet’s methods with how the Hamas tortured suspected collaborators.  He decided to accept a Shin Bet approach to become an informant.  Since his release from prison in 1997, Yousef was considered the Shin Bet’s most reliable source in the Hamas leadership, earning himself the nickname the “Green Prince” – using the color of the Islamist group’s flag, and “prince” because of his pedigree as the son of one of the movement’s founders. The intelligence he supplied Israel led to the exposure of a number of Hamas cells as well as the prevention of dozens of suicide bombings and assassination attempts on Israeli figures. He has claimed that he did not inform for money but rather that his motivations were ideological and religious, and that he only wanted to save lives.

Yousef has stated that he supplied intelligence only on the condition that the “targets” would not be killed, but arrested. This led to the detention of several key Palestinian leaders, including Ibrahim Hamid, a Hamas commander in the West Bank, and Marwan Barghouti. Also, Yousef claims to have thwarted a 2001 plot to assassinate Shimon Peres, then foreign minister and now President of Israel. “Many people owe him their lives and don’t even know it”, says his former Shin Bet officer.

When I wrote about Yousef (now known as Joseph) last March, the Obama administration, for some insane, inexplicable reason, was trying to deport him. Fortunately, at the end of June, they dropped their effort, and an immigration judge granted him asylum. Had he been deported, it would almost certainly have been a death sentence.

In early February, Yousef will be making two appearances in the Denver area:

February 9

6:30pm

Faith Bible Chapel

6210 Ward Road
Arvada, CO 80004

February 10

7:00pm

Hebrew Educational Alliance

3600 South Ivanhoe Street
Denver, CO 80237

*Sponsored by Americans Against Terrorism, Faith Bible Chapel, and Stand With US and endorsed by a coalition of over 20 groups, synagogues and churches. For more information on sponsorship, please call 303-437-3144

(Perks are available for large donors)

If you're in the Denver area and at all concerned about Islamist jihad, it behooves you to attend one of these events. If you can't attend, you may want to check out Son of Hamas, which Claudia Rosett said "reads with the page-turning ease of a great thriller." (I confess I haven't read it. I have a sizable stack of unread books in my house, and promised myself I wouldn't buy more until I significantly reduced the size of that stack.)

Oh, and if you can spare a few bucks to help promote these events, please click the "here" link above to donate. I have.

Colorado weather update

Posted by Richard on December 16, 2010

For the benefit (?) of those of you back east suffering under some of the worst winter weather in ages, the low in Denver on Tuesday morning was 35°. That's 2° above Atlanta's high for the day. We reached a record high of 70°. Lest you blame my SUV, the previous record of 69° was set in the 1920s before there were SUVs.

Denver has had an extremely mild and dry winter so far, with lots of days in the 60s recently. Atlanta has had more snow so far this December than Denver. The reason isn't global warming, it's a strong La Niña. But before you Easterners get too jealous, we're about to get a change. A cold front moving in Wednesday afternoon should bring 3-6" of snow to the Denver area by Thursday morning, along with highs in the 30s.

If news of our mild weather is causing you to reconsider that ski trip, don't. The La Niña pattern, as usual, has been sending Pacific storms out of the northwest into the Rockies every few days for many weeks, and the mountain snowfalls have been epic. Steamboat had a record November, with over 90" of snow. Most of the other big destination resorts aren't far behind. The northern and central mountain resorts have been getting about a foot or so of new snow every 3 or 4 days for weeks now.

It's the best of both worlds — awesome snow in the mountains and golfing or biking weather down here in the city. The only problem for skiers has been getting to the mountains. They have to time their drive in between I-70 closures. πŸ™‚

UPDATE (12/16): The winter storm for Denver fizzled. No snow, just cold — so I think Atlanta's still ahead of us in December snowfall. πŸ™‚ But the mountains got a decent dumping, and I-70 was closed for several hours.

Regulation Reality Tour hits Colorado

Posted by Richard on April 19, 2010

Americans for Prosperity is bringing its Regulation Reality Tour to Colorado April 19-21. It sounds like a fun event with a serious message. "Carbon Cops" in SMART cars will drive home the message that the EPA's efforts to regulate carbon emissions (without congressional action) threaten to burden us with onerous regulations, taxes, and fines for activities that harm no one, further harming our economy.

I plan to drop by the Denver event at the State Capitol Monday evening (5-6 PM) after work. There'll be free hot dogs and something called "moon bounce." I don't know about the latter, but I'll definitely grab a free hot dog. If you're in the neighborhood, please join me.

Other Colorado events are scheduled in Ft. Collins and Aurora on Monday, Highlands Ranch and Colorado Springs on Tuesday, and Montrose, Grand Junction, and Wheat Ridge on Wednesday. All offer free food and most offer the mysterious "moon bounce." Get more info and sign up to attend here (you don't have to sign up to attend, but the free food supply is more likely to be adequate if you do). Bring the family — I'm guessing "moon bounce" is something the kids will like.

Great day, great Tea Party in Denver

Posted by Richard on April 16, 2010

It was a beautiful spring day in Denver, sunny and mild — a perfect day to spend 3 hours amidst thousands of small-government, pro-liberty people having a great time at the State Capitol. Best use of a vacation day I've made in some time.

I only caught bits and pieces of most of the speakers because I did a lot of wandering around, looking at the crowd, the signs, and the handful of counter-demonstrators across the street. Bumped into several old friends. I did listen to Jimmy Lakey's speech, and wow, he is as his website bio says, "a gifted communicator."

I didn't see any outrageous signs or other indications that there were "Crash the Tea Party" infiltrators in the crowd. Didn't even see the dead fetus signs that the anti-abortion folks usually bring to every rally, no matter what the cause or sponsor.

One of the counter-demonstrators had a sign that read "Lynch Palin" — thus proving that Tea Parties do attract misogynists who advocate violence against women.

Most of the local media are citing a crowd estimate of 2,000. Last year's event was estimated at 3,000, and I'd say this crowd was comparable, if not larger. But at least no one I'm aware of is calling it "dozens."

One TV station followed the "downplay the Tea Party" script. 9News has a video on their website from their noon newscast in which the reporter on the scene, Brooke Thacker, was asked for an estimate. She said hundreds, even while the brief crowd shots in the accompanying video made a liar out of her. The AP story posted adjacent to the video says 2,000.

It got worse. 9News didn't air any of the speakers or interview any of the organizers — just a clip of some realtor saying that the housing market was really bad. Thacker gave a cursory, shallow description of why people were there. But after the remote from the rally, anchor Kyle Dyer explained that they wanted to present "the other side," so she did a phone interview with the Democratic Party chair, who was allowed to rattle off all the Democratic talking points at some length. Epic journalistic fail, 9News.

The People's Press Collective streamed the whole thing live, and at one point they announced that over 6,000 people were receiving the stream — I think they should all count as virtual attendees. πŸ™‚ PPC has some video and pictures posted already, and I understand video of all the speakers will be available this evening. Check out that Jimmy Lakey speech.

Attend your local Tax Day Tea Party

Posted by Richard on April 14, 2010

I hope you'll take some time away from work and/or last-minute number crunching tomorrow to attend a Tax Day Tea Party in your area. Tea Party Patriots lists over 750 such scheduled events, and you can find one near you by city, state, or ZIP code.

I'm taking the day off to attend the Denver Tea Party. Like all good Denver rallies, it's at the State Capitol, and it's scheduled for 10 AM to 1 PM. If you're going, too, look for me and say hi — I'll be the, um, "mature" fellow with a beard wearing an "Infidel" t-shirt.

If you've never been to a Tea Party rally, you'll be amazed at how friendly, good-natured, and diverse the crowd is. But keep your eye out for leftist "Crash the Tea Party" infiltrators pretending to be Nazis, bigots, and yahoos in an effort to discredit the movement. You might want to bring a pocket videocam to capture the fun — and the truth.

Remember what the left taught us: "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." So get out there and be patriotic! πŸ™‚

UPDATE: Ann Althouse has some good advice on dealing with leftist tea-party crashers. Some good comments, too, like this by Fred4Pres:

I have been to a few tea party events and they are about as edgy as a Rotary or Lions Club meeting. If someone is making a complete jackass of themselves, I am going to conclude that person is a Kos Kid.
