Newspaper bailout?

Posted by Richard on December 4, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, I noted:

When you start handing out free money, expect a long line to form. Wall Street bankers and insurance companies have been joined in the bailout line by student loan debtors (and their creditors), domestic auto makers, states, municipalities, … I'm sure the line will get longer day by day.

The latest candidates for a bailout? Newspapers. They're in trouble all across the country, with waves of layoffs and seas of red ink. According to Michelle Malkin, politicians in at least one state are now talking about a government rescue plan for their struggling papers:

It was supposed to be a joke. As an endless parade of corporate beggars marches to Washington in search of handouts for their beleaguered industries, some of us in the news business snarked that journalists would be next in line. I launched a Newspaper Bailout Countdown Clock on my blog after The New York Times Company's bonds plunged into junk territory in October. A few weeks later, columnist Jon Fine published a tongue-in-cheek memo in BusinessWeek outlining a federal newspaper rescue proposal.

The jibes were meant to be facetious critiques of for-profit enterprises demanding massive taxpayer expenditures under the guise of preserving the "public interest." But now, in a rather unfunny turn, the newspaper bailout push has actually come to pass.

The Republican governor and the Democratic attorney general of Connecticut went on the record last week in support of government intervention for failing local newspapers. God save us from bipartisanship.

I'm sure tonight there are folks at the Rocky Mountain News hoping this idea gains traction. Owner E.W. Scripps Co. put it up for sale today, and I suspect they'll have a hard time finding a buyer:

The Rocky Mountain News is on the sale block, facing an uncertain future as Colorado's oldest newspaper approaches its 150th anniversary.

The head of Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps, the Rocky's owner, acknowledged in making the announcement Thursday that if a buyer does not step forward in the next four to six weeks that the paper could be closed — a move that could occur as soon as early 2009.

Scripps expects the Rocky to lose $15 million this year, Boehne said.

A buyer would not only have to reverse those losses (in the face of declining ad revenue), but would be saddled with half the $130 million debt of the Denver Newspaper Agency, the production company owned jointly by the Rocky and the Denver Post.

"It's a terrible time to be trying to sell a newspaper," said Rick Edmonds, media business analyst at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank in St. Petersburg, Fla. "There might be some potential buyers, but they might have a hard time getting credit. A couple of years ago I would've said there was a very high chance that Media News would buy it, but they are too stretched right now."

Michael Howard, who joined the Rocky as a reporter in 1965 and served as editor of the paper from 1974 to 1980, said he doesn't "know anyone dumb enough to buy a newspaper right now."

Howard, a descendent of the Howard family that formed half of the former Scripps-Howard newspaper chain, doubted a sale would be successful. He said he believes it was "inevitable we were headed toward a one-newspaper town. It's very sad."

Maybe editor/publisher John Temple should head for Congress, hat in hand. He should probably drive there in a hybrid.

Of course, I'm not for a government bailout of the Rocky. But I've been a subscriber for over two decades, and I do think it's sad.

Anybody know Rupert Murdoch's private number?

A Broncos thought

Posted by Richard on December 1, 2008

I wonder what their record would be if they played all their games on the road against strong opponents.

Unfortunately, next Sunday's game is at home against the very weak Chiefs. So that's not looking good.

Oh, those hated Raiders

Posted by Richard on November 24, 2008

I bet you didn't know this: there's a city ordinance in Denver that requires all uses of the proper noun "Raiders," spoken or print, to be preceded by the adjective "hated."

So today the Broncos played host to the hated Raiders. And the outcome sucked.

That's the trouble with having to rely on lots of young players. Sometimes they provide the energy and enthusiasm that really makes a difference, like the previous two weeks. But sometimes they bring inexperience and errors.

But, really, most of the blame for today's humiliating defeat belongs to Jay Cutler. When he's on his game, he's every bit as great a QB as he thinks he is. But when he's off, he really stinks up the place.

Oh, well — the Chargers lost, too, so nothing much changed in the division.

And later tonight, 24: Redemption was good enough to make me forget the game. You've got to love a show where the first villain you see is a cowardly, duplicitous U.N. "peacekeeper" who keeps braying "We remain neutral!" and then sells out a bunch of kids. Now that's realism.

Happy birthday, Denver!

Posted by Richard on November 22, 2008

Denver is 150 years old today:

Denver's 150th anniversaryOn November 22, 1858, Gen. William Larimer, a land speculator from eastern Kansas, placed cottonwood sticks on the hill overlooking the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek to stake a claim at the center of a square-mile town plat. Now, 150 years later, Denver is the 21st largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Despite being run by (and overrun by) Democrats, Denver is a pretty cool place. And America's foremost bovine metropolis.

Maybe I'll head downtown to one of the watering holes on Larimer Street and raise a glass to the General. Or wander over to Confluence Park and imagine what he saw as he stood on that hill.

Broncos – Falcons

Posted by Richard on November 17, 2008

Surprising: Denver defeated a strong Atlanta team on the road.

Amazing: The injury-plagued Broncos did it starting 8 rookies, several at skill positions.

Incredible: They did it with 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-string running backs. The latter, Tatum Bell, was selling cell phones at the Aurora Mall last week.

Unbelievable: One of the rookies, Spencer Larsen, played offense, defense, and special teams. He started at both fullback and middle linebacker. Teammates are calling him "Neon Deon," but I don't see the resemblance.

Things are looking up for the Broncos. A few more injuries and they may be unbeatable.

Broncos rose from the ashes

Posted by Richard on November 7, 2008

I admit I gave up on the Broncos after that pitiful first half and switched channels. Hey, CSI was on! But thanks to the DVR, I was able to watch the fourth-quarter comeback later.

That was a pretty gritty victory. Cutler looked impressive for the first time in a while. Brandon Marshall redeemed himself (and was prevented from doing something truly stupid and costly after his TD by teammate Brandon Stokley). And a bunch of unknown backups filling in for the growing list of injured players rose to the occasion.

I swear, I think the Broncos' only remaining running back is some guy they found jogging along the Cuyahoga River just before kickoff.

I've got to say, though, that Browns coach Romeo Crennel seems to have done the right thing by benching Derek Anderson. That Brady Quinn is a pretty impressive kid. Keep an eye on him. I'm just glad Winslow inexplicably let that fourth-down pass slip through his fingers.

Broncos taking night off

Posted by Richard on October 21, 2008

I really wanted to watch the Broncos play football tonight. But apparently, they've decided not to do that.

I don't know what you call what they're doing in Foxborough tonight, but it doesn't look much like professional football.

I'm not really interested in seeing if Denver can set a team record for most turnovers in a game. Think I'll turn in early.

Mobile Pie Hole in Denver

Posted by Richard on September 16, 2008

If you're a fan of the charming, quirky, and seriously surreal ABC fantasy series Pushing Daisies (I am), and you'll be in the downtown Denver area this Wednesday, September 17th (I won't be, darn it), drop by Larimer Square (1430 Larimer Street) between 10 AM and 2 PM. The "Mobile Pie Hole" restaurant will be there. They'll be giving out free pie, pie cutters, spatulas, etc., and playing footage from the show on plasma TVs as waitresses on daisy bicycles ride around.

If you've seen the show, that made perfect sense. If not, take my word for it, it'll be fun.

Other upcoming Mobile Pie Hole visits are scheduled in Dallas, Chicago, Philly, and NYC. More info at Pushing Daisies Touch of Wonder Tour (requires Flash player).

The new season of Pushing Daisies begins Oct. 1. If you've never seen it and have a broadband connection, check it out online — you can watch several complete episodes here. I bet you'll become a fan.

Broncos get gutsy win

Posted by Richard on September 15, 2008

Going into today's game, I figured Denver had no better than a 50-50 chance of beating San Diego. I became more optimistic during the first half, but wasn't all that surprised by how badly the 3rd quarter went for them. When Cutler was intercepted in the end zone, I pretty much gave up on the game.

I had an errand to run and wanted to run it before post-game traffic got bad, so I heard the rest of the game on the radio. That reminded me of one of the drawbacks to watching HDTV: the several seconds by which an HD telecast is delayed means you can't watch the game on TV while listening to Dave Logan's play-by-play on the radio. Logan is so much better than the high-paid network TV guys.

If you're a Broncos fan, you probably watched, and you no doubt know all the amazing numbers and what an exciting game it was. Like me, you were probably expecting to see some overtime football when Denver scored with seconds to play. So I won't do a lengthy write-up, I'll just make two observations:

  1. It's a good thing for the Broncos that Brandon Marshall appealed his suspension and got it reduced to one game.
  2. Mike Shanahan has stones the size of Volkswagens.

UPDATE: Zombyboy has eight more observations than I do, and they're good.

Are the Broncos back?

Posted by Richard on September 9, 2008

It's hard to say how much of tonight's Raider drubbing was due to improvement of the Broncos and how much was an indication of just what a sorry team Oakland has. But it was fun to watch the hated Raiders humiliated. If you want deeper, more thoughtful analysis, try Zombyboy's Ten Thoughts About the Broncos Opener. Me, I'm just going to have another beer and enjoy the afterglow.

I survived the day after Blogger Bash

Posted by Richard on August 30, 2008

RMBB5000Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash 5000, the Donkeys Over Denver edition, was a smashing success. Congrats and thanks to Mr. Lady and Zombyboy for putting together a fantastic event. Thanks to Lijit.com, You2Gov.com, and Cre8Buzz.com for their sponsorship (which means buying us drinks and food). And thanks to Trios Enoteca for treating us so well and being such a great venue.

It was almost 2 AM and most of the chairs were up on the tables when Off Colfax and I stumbled out of there and up the 16th Street Mall, he heading for the #15 bus and I for the light rail. The 2 AM train was standing room only!

So here's where the one big negative about RMBB 5000 reared its ugly head: to fit the DNCC schedule, it was on a Thursday. That meant going to work in the morning. Later the same morning, that is.

It was about 3:30 when I hit the sack, wisely deciding against the usual 6 AM alarm. Even the 7 AM alarm required three or four swipes at the snooze button. Thanks to Life Extension Foundation's Anti-Alcohol Antioxidants, I was spared a hangover. (Have I mentioned what a great product that is, and what a fine organization LEF is?) But I'm just way too old to get by on less than four hours' sleep.

So the workday kind of sucked. And when I got home this evening, a three-hour nap seemed like a great substitute for supper.

(Oh, yeah — Obama gave a great speech. The substantive policy content totally sucked, but he sure did deliver it! And the many out-of-town lefty bloggers in attendance practically orgasmed right there on the back room floor.)

Hillary

Posted by Richard on August 27, 2008

No, I didn't watch the speech. But I read Stephen Green's drunkblogging of it. I'm pretty certain that was the right decision. Especially after seeing a picture of her in that orange pants-suit. As Green put it, "With those hips and that suit, she looks like a highway cone."

According to Glenn Reynolds, "TV talking-heads seem to think her endorsement of Obama was minimal," which surprises me not at all.

Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash 5000

Posted by Richard on August 27, 2008

RMBB5000I've got good news and bad news about Thursday night's Rocky Mountain Blogger Bash, the Donkeys Over Denver edition. First, the bad news: It's too late to RSVP — and that means no two free drinks. Now the good news: Anyone and everyone is invited to attend, RSVP or not — you just have to buy your own drinks.

Hey, you were going to buy some anyway, now you just have to buy two more. More info, including how to get there, here.

Now, on a related note, please drop by Billll's Idle Mind and wish him a speedy recovery from his bad bicycle accident. Because he won't be able to attend the Blogger Bash.

Don't get any ideas, though. I've already called dibs on his free drinks.

American Victory Coalition rally in Denver

Posted by Richard on August 23, 2008

[Bumped to top and updated]
UPDATE (8/23): According to a Colorado Dennis Prager fan, big-league blogger and columnist Michelle Malkin will be at this rally. I know she's going to be in town for the convention, so this is plausible. I hope she'll bring her trampoline. 😉

If you're anywhere near Denver, please join me in attending the American Victory Coalition rally at Pioneer Monument Park (right across the street from Civic Center Park at Colfax and Broadway) on Sunday, August 24th, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Participating organizations include Families United for Our Troops and Their Mission, Vets for Freedom, and A Gathering of Eagles.

The rally will feature Gold Star Mom Debbie Lee (link is to YouTube video), mother of the first Navy Seal killed in Iraq, Marc Allen Lee. I've been impressed by Debbie Lee's writings, and I'm looking forward to hearing her speak. Other speakers include Green Beret Maj. Diggs Brown, Jr. , Vets for Freedom chairman Pete Hegseth, and Colorado State Senator (Col.) Steve Ward.

El Marco explains the event:

Our goal is to show the world America’s true colors: strength, patriotism and resolve in the war on terror. The Democratic National Convention will be a left wing free-for-all with mass media trumpeting radical anti-war messages. If you respect our troops, their commanders and their mission, this is the opportunity to make your voice heard.

Media attention on Americans who actively support victory is almost non-existent. This is an opportunity to change that.  It’s important for the public to see that the “silent majority” is silent no more. Also this rally will be directly in view of the delegates to the DNC, who clearly need to hear this message. The organizers welcome anyone who wants to show their support for victory in the war against radical Islamic extremists and the regimes that support them.

If you're in the Colorado Springs area or around Monument or Castle Rock, there are seats available on the Families United shuttle buses to the event. Go here and scroll down past the sample posters for information.

I'm planning to take the light rail to the 16th Street mall and walk over from there. Organizers say they'll have extra signs available, so I won't have to carry one on the train (who knows what the rules about that are!). If you're coming from outside central Denver, you might want to park at the Broadway & I-25 Park and Ride and take the train from there. Otherwise, keep in mind that meters in downtown Denver are free on Sundays.

See you there! I'll be the bearded guy in this Protest Warrior T-shirt
